Two elliptical glass pavillions
Segmented walls with custom VS1 mullion
VS1 was selected for two new pavilion facades at the Valerio Dewalt Train-designed renovation of the historic Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, IL. The complex is undergoing significant refurbishment in recognition of its centennial celebration.
The two pavilions—a new ticket booth and a reimagined entryway—face each other across an existing reflecting pool. Both installations are segmented circular walls composed of flat glass along a radius. A new 6” bullet-shaped mullion was created to accomplish the facade, which reaches 15’6” at its maximum height. Notably, the facades are elliptical in both elevation and plan view; the VS1 walls terminate into the roof accordingly.
Finally the facades feature all-glass corners, a standard VS1 detail, and provide the portal opening for Ellison all-glass balanced doors. The glass features a ceramic frit for bird safety; collisions with glass cause 1 billion bird deaths in the United States annually.
Installation of the two pavilions is under way and should be completed this year.
