35,000 sq. ft. facade
28'6" VS1 clear span; large missile impact-rated version of system
Once completed, the Mobile International Airport will feature 35,000 sq. ft. of VS1, all of which will be framed with a large missile impact-rated version of VS1. This project is in wind zone 4, where the most stringent hurricane wind speeds occur. The system underwent the corresponding ASTM E 1886 / 1996 test and passed on round one.
The main scope showcases a 28.5’ clear spanning VS1 wall with a 10” deep aluminum profile and no secondary steel support. The façade features offset horizontal glazing joints, a staple approach often used by project architect HOK. The design is similar to another VS1 design by HOK at the Consumer Credit Union headquarters in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
