Offset Glass Joints
The flexibility of the VS1 kit of parts allows for an unprecedented level of freedom in curtain wall design. Due to the absence of horizontal metal at the sill and head joints of a VS1 installation, the face glass can be positioned as the architect desires. A common use of this freedom is to alternately offset the placement of face glass in adjacent window bays, effectively uncoupling the horizontal joint from the floor elevations and creating a counterbalancing effect.
Another use is to switch between a larger piece of glass and two smaller pieces within the same bay, as seen in the VS1 facades at O’Hare Terminal 5 in Chicago.
